Review: Awesome Forces of God’s Creation
Hi everyone, if you are reading this on the Sabbath, then I’d like to wish you a wonderful Sabbath filled with God’s presence.
True to the Word is continuing with our science thread for our program reviews. It truly is a joy to watch them to learn about God’s creation and worship Him, for His works and character. So please join me, as I review the three part series, Awesome Forces of God’s Creation, continuing with Part 2 - Whirling Wind, presented by Jim Pemble and produced by Moody Publications.
The program overview in Jim Pemble’s introduction gears us up for a spectacular program. Jim tells us we are going to learn about:
How hurricanes and tornadoes are born
The dynamics of weather around the globe
The science behind weather forecasting
How they powerful events always bring us back to the Creator of all things - God.
The program is around fifty minutes and they manage to pack in a lot of technical and informative information.
Explanation of the four layers of the air surrounding the earth
Illustration of how the sun and the earth’s rotation are related to the weather conditions
High pressure and low pressure air cycles
Interesting facts about thunderstorms (up to 2000 storms a day over the globe!)
How hail is formed.
Fact: baseball sized hail travels up to 100 mph and if it hits something, the target experiences the equivalent to being hit by a baseball in a major league game!
How severe weather, like hurricane and tropical storms are tracked, through the National Weather Service (this information has surely been updated, but I found it interesting to see how a weather balloon is sent into storms to gather information). It made me wonder weather balloons are still used, as this program was from a while ago (the end credits didn’t say when it was made). I was pleasantly surprised to read this statement on the National Weather Service website:
Weather balloons are the primary source of data above the ground. They provide valuable input for computer forecast models, local data for meteorologists to make forecasts and predict storms, and data for research. Computer forecast models which use weather balloon data are used by all forecasters worldwide, from National Weather Service meteorologists to your local TV weatherman! Without this information, accurate forecasts beyond a few hours would be almost impossible! Source: https://www.weather.gov/bmx/kidscorner_weatherballoons
So there we have it, weather balloons are still used and the Whirling Wind program shows you how they are used.
The program also contained powerful storm survivor accounts. We heard from people who had survived lightning, hurricanes and tornadoes. One lady speaks of how some things were picked up and put down carefully, while other things were destroyed. For example: tables and chairs that were whirled 100s of meters away were put down without one dish being broke! For me, that is just too much to unpack!
Some of the survivors spoke about their faith and the awesome power of God. There was also a scientist that gave the glory to God, realizing all the things he saw and experienced as a scientist had a higher being behind it all. The word that came to my mind watching these interviews was “humbling”.
Jim finishes off the episode by emphasizing that man has a limited grasp of God’s creation. Though technology advances, we will never be able to harness the weather. Jim interviewed scientists that came to the same conclusion.
Jim mentioned how King David and Solomon spoke of the power of the forces of God. I am reminded of the Book of Job and the questions God asks Job about his knowledge of creation, in Chapters 38-41 - humbling.
Jim tells us that love and wisdom is at the root of creation - those two words, love and wisdom that we overuse and take for granted are far too much to unpack when we think about them in terms of our Creator.
Thank you for reading this review. Until next time - peace be with you.
