Film Review: Always A Winner

If you are reading this review on the Sabbath, then I would like to wish you a Sabbath filled with hope and faith that Jesus Christ is coming back soon.

This week’s review is for the film, Always A Winner, by Dave Christiano.

This film is a follow-up to the films, Remember the Goal and A Perfect Race. I have watched and reviewed both of these films. I’ll put the links below.

Proverbs 16:33 was shown at the beginning of the film: The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord (KJV).

The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the Lord (NKJV)

This film had two main themes.  God is in control (Proverbs 16:33) and a statement Jesus made, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31).  These themes are played out through a Christian school’s golf team.  In addition to this, the question of how we act when we win or lose came up.  When we win, do we boast? When we lose, do we become angry?

In a world that encourages winning and boasting, this film points us to who we should be relying on for our value system - Jesus Christ.

A character in the film said that, God knows how to bring a person to their knees. This made me think of King Nebuchadnezzar, who walked through his palace and claimed the glory for the kingdom.  He said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”  Daniel 4:28-30.

You can read in Daniel 4: 31-37 how God responded to Nebuchadnezzar’s pride and the result of God’s action against him.  Daniel 5 goes on to give a chilling account of what happened to Nebuchadnezzar’s descendant, King Belshazzar, in his blatant disregard for God’s sovereignty.

This film does a good job of encouraging us to do what Jesus would do.  How do we know what Jesus would do?  Read the Bible.   2 Timothy 3:16-17:  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

There is another important issue covered in this film, but I will let you watch the film for yourself to discover what that is.

Christian films are often criticized for poor acting.  Or deemed as being corny. My main goal when watching a film, is to look at the message being conveyed.  When I started reviewing films, I had a list of values I used to judge whether a film was truly giving glory to God and pointing us to Christ.  This list can be found in the earlier podcasts and blogs.  I still go by that list, I just don’t consistently repeat it, to avoid monotony.  While the Sabbath is not recognized in this film (they play a tournament on the Saturday), this film covers many Christian values.

There is a wonderful song played during the film called, Somebody’s Praying for You. The scene that this song accompanied was very powerful.   I looked up the song on Spotify afterwards.

Always A Winner, is a great film about living by Christian values, through faith, no matter what life throws at us.

My daily verse says this: Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:  2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.  Romans 5:1-2

Amen

I watched, Always A Winner, on the Christian Movies YouTube channel.

Thank you for reading this review.  Until next time - peace be with you.
